Australian and Interdominion Championship 1995
Glenelg, Australia, 14 - 17 April
The combined Australian and Interdominion Championship was sailed from Glenelg Sailing Club over the Easter weekend from Friday 14th to Sunday 17th April 1995.
The event attracted 23 entries, which included 3 New Zealanders, 3 from NSW, 9 from Vic and 8 locals including defending National Champion Alastair McMichael who won the previous Easter on the testing river course at Drummoyne.
The event got underway on Good Friday with Heats 1 & 2 sailed back to back, with an on-water lunch break between races. Conditions were light and somewhat flukey, with Alastair picking up 2 wins while Matt Johnson, Justin Graham and Roger Blasse filled the minor places.
Day 2 was another day of light and variable conditions for Heats 3 & 4 where Mark Fisher showing some good form in winning the day with a 1st and a 4th, with Roger, Matt and Alastair gaining good placings to remain in contention.
Day 3 produced a significant change of cold, wet and windy conditions, with racing delayed until after lunch. Conditions did settle down somewhat as the boats headed out for Heat 5, but by the time the race got underway the wind cranked up again and conditions began to deteriorate. The race was called off halfway through with some boats coming to grief and a bit of carnage to be cleaned up in the process.
The light and variable conditions returned on Monday for the last day of racing. Roger Blasse won Heat 5 from Alastair and Paul Richards. For Heat 6 the light conditions deteriorated further with a strong current adding to the difficulties. Only 8 boats managed to finish before the time limit, with Roger and Alastair 1 & 2 and Bob Buchanan in 3rd.
Congratulations to Alastair in defending his national title with some clever sailing, Roger a close 2nd and Mark Fisher 3rd. Bob Buchanan won the Veterans and the Patrick Whittington Trophies, while Marcus Wettenhall was the first Junior.
